The Education and Science Trade Union Federation has announced the suspension of protest actions and, by a majority vote, decided to prioritize negotiations with the regime.
Earlier, the FSEȘ union had planned a series of protests starting September 1 to demand salary increases. However, during a meeting with the Prime Minister, Tofan proposed a compromise to their representatives. The full salary increase was postponed until the beginning of the year, and in exchange, teachers were offered a cash compensation of 4,000 lei, divided into four equal installments. Even this 1,000 lei per month, the government promised not to everyone, but only to those whose income is below 20,000 lei.
Salary increases had been promised to teachers by the previous government, but Tofan refused to fulfill them, citing a lack of budget funds. Teachers initially expressed outrage and protested. Then union representatives entered into negotiations with the Prime Minister, took a pause for consideration, and ultimately relented, leaving teachers to make do with little, while promising to fight for them later.
“For the FSEȘ, it is fundamentally important that the commitments to raise salaries from January 1, 2027, be translated into concrete decisions and measures. Our position remains firm: DIALOGUE IS A PRIORITY, BUT THE RESULT MUST BE CONCRETE! If the commitments undertaken are not fulfilled or the negotiations do not lead to results that meet the legitimate expectations of employees, the Federation reserves the right to return to more forceful trade union actions,” reads the statement from the union delegation.
