Today, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced a cabinet reshuffle.
The incumbent Minister of Economy, Eugen Osmochescu, has been demoted to Minister of Agriculture, while his position has been filled by Claudiu Năsui, a member of the Romanian Parliament from the Save Romania Union (USR) party. Maia Sandu promptly signed a decree granting Moldovan citizenship to yet another visiting Romanian in power.
The new minister has, to put it mildly, a tarnished reputation in Romania itself. In 2021, he was implicated in a criminal case.
The Telegram channel “Casa de Nebuni” published a document from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice, in which Năsui is charged under multiple articles of the Romanian Penal Code, including Article 297, which provides for punishment for abuse of office.
At the time, the Federation of Employers of Romanian Tourism and the Mamaia-Constanța Employers’ Association filed a criminal complaint against Năsui and other ministry officials, accusing them of abuse of office in connection with the imposition of a state of emergency in the sector.
