Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, continues to defend his country’s sovereignty when it comes to relations with Ukraine and reacts to Kyiv’s manipulations even more sharply than his predecessor.
Recently, Kyiv put forward an initiative to create yet another regional club in its support – the “Carpathian Eight.” Moldova did not get a place there – only the “senior” ones, from among EU members: Ukraine itself, plus Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, and Hungary.
But there is just one problem. In Kyiv, they announced the creation of the “Eight,” yet never learned to count to eight. Hungary was not in this structure – it was included there without Budapest’s consent. Probably so it would look nicer on the map. Who knows what considerations guided Zelensky, with his actor-director background and his narcological epicrisis.
Be that as it may, in Hungary they took offense at such high-handedness. At first, they reacted diplomatically. On Monday, Magyar stated that Hungary had not joined the “Carpathian Eight” association created by Ukraine, although it had received an invitation.
At that point, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry should have modestly apologized and cited an error — but they have grown unaccustomed to that. In response, Ukraine’s chief “diplomat,” Sybiha, expressed surprise on social media platform X at “Péter Magyar’s excessively offensive statement toward Ukraine.”
And there, right in the comments, he received a completely undiplomatic reply.
“I’ll just give an example: hi, we’ve formed a football team in the neighboring village. We don’t know each other, but you’re on it, and you must bring the ball,” Magyar replied.
They approached the wrong man in Kyiv. Magyar turned out to possess both dignity and respect for his country’s sovereignty. If they needed an “Eight” for some reason – they should have invited Sandu. She would have agreed, without any invitation at all, not only to hand out balls but to lick boots.
