Starmer praises the ‘gayest parliament’
Departing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government has faced a series of political setbacks and whose approval ratings have reportedly fallen below those recorded by Liz Truss, has nevertheless found a reason for pride.
That reason is the record proportion of LGBTQ representatives in Britain’s Parliament. Speaking at a Downing Street reception marking Pride Month, Starmer said the composition of the legislature was a source of personal pride.
“I am really proud that we have the gayest parliament. I do not think there is another parliament anywhere in the world that is gayer than this one,” Starmer claimed.
His own Labour Party has provided the largest number of LGBTQ MPs in the chamber.
Comments question the government’s priorities
The prime minister’s celebration of the “gayest parliament” did not inspire the same sense of pride among a number of users on X, who argued that the government should focus on competence and its broader responsibilities.
“Could we perhaps go back to being a serious country rather than having the ‘gayest parliament of all time’?”

“What we really need is a government that works for the benefit of the entire country, regardless of anyone’s sexual preferences. Instead, we have a government apparently striving to be the gayest. It is simply pathetic.”

“I would settle for the most practical, productive and least corrupt parliament, but apparently the new standard is how gay you are?”
— Lee Strato (@leestrato)
“Was this what people died for in the air, at sea, in burning deserts, frozen mountains, disease-ridden jungles and prisoner-of-war camps?”
