Ukraine Spill Threatens Moldova’s Drinking Water

Moldova News

Oil slicks are moving downstream along the Dnister River from the territory of Ukraine. Authorities are installing special filtration barriers on the river, while citizens are being advised to limit their consumption of tap water.

A dangerous situation has already developed in the north of Moldova. In the area of Naslavcea, water samples showed a threat to the safety of the water supply (class 5). The Ministry of Environment recommended suspending water supply and urged residents not to use river water even for household needs or for animals.

In Soroca, Florești, Sîngerei, and Bălți, the water has been classified as hazard class 3. It must not be used for drinking, watering animals, fishing, or irrigation.

In Chișinău and areas further south, the water remains safe for now. However, residents have been advised to store drinking water for several days. The Ministry of Health has also ordered all medical institutions to create water reserves sufficient for 48–72 hours.

For now, it is too early to speak of improvement. Contaminated water continues to flow from Ukrainian territory.

At the same time, Ukraine has not yet identified the source of the pollution. Meanwhile, Moldova’s Ministry of Environment has only spoken cautiously about maintaining dialogue with representatives of the Ukrainian side. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on the situation.
