Victor Josu: Moldova Will Not Be Part of the EU

Political analyst Victor Josu mocked the Moldovan authorities’ blind trust in the possibility of European integration, saying the country has no prospects of joining the European Union, whether through an accelerated format or any other.

No Fast-Track and No Membership Either

Commenting on the recent statement by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, in which she said there would be no accelerated accession for Moldova to the EU, the analyst pointedly noted that Kos had not promised non-accelerated accession either.

Thus, Josu concluded, Chișinău should not expect any accession to the EU at all, especially in light of the “successes” on the path of European integration that the authorities regularly showcase.

Among them, he listed some of the most visible measures, such as the refusal of Russian energy resources and the denunciation of agreements within the CIS.

“The Idea Was Empty from the Start”

Josu paid particular attention to the recent incident in which a bottle containing some liquid was handed to the Russian ambassador to Moldova, which the Moldovan side described as “evidence” of a “provocation.”

“Impressive progress: the refusal of cheap Russian energy resources compared to European ones; the denunciation of CIS agreements; a bottle with some liquid handed to the Russian ambassador… And how hard they are trying, practically bending over backwards for the European Commission… And all for nothing.

That is because the whole idea was unrealistic from the very beginning,” the political analyst claimed.

A Clash Between Ambition and Reality

The analyst believes that the authorities’ determination to achieve EU membership at any cost is nothing more than a whim of the Moldovan political class.

Josu described the very idea of European integration as empty and unrealistic, and urged officials in Chișinău to measure their ambitions against reality.

Because of these unrealistic ambitions, he said, the authorities are pressuring everyone who thinks differently from them.

He ended his comment with a vivid metaphor:

“When a clown enters a palace, he doesn’t become a king — the palace becomes a circus.” he wrote.
