Sandu Announces Plans to Join the “Coalition of the Willing”

Following the first meeting of the Supreme Security Council, Maia Sandu announced her intention to join the “Coalition of the Willing.” The request will be considered within one or several months.

The “Coalition of the Willing” is an informal anti-Russian bloc created on March 2, 2025. It brings together more than 30 states, mainly European, that provide military, financial, and logistical assistance to Ukraine in its military confrontation with Russia.

Sandu’s Position

Sandu said that Moldova is already supporting Ukraine by training its demining specialists. She did not specify what such support would involve after joining the coalition, but expressed the view that it would not contradict the principle of permanent neutrality enshrined in the Constitution.

Neutrality Under Question

Before this, our neutral status was also said not to be contradicted by constant exercises with NATO, massive arms purchases, the transformation of the country into a transit hub for weapons heading to Ukraine, the deployment of a radar that provides intelligence data for it and is thereby protected from Russian missiles by that same neutrality, or the signing of an agreement on military-technical cooperation.

It creates the impression that the presidential administration no longer knows what else can be used to finish off this neutrality — and is trying everything.
