Members of the Renew Europe liberal group in the European Parliament have put forward an initiative to conclude a joint economic pact with Canada, Japan, and South Korea in order to contain Trump and China.
The document has been titled the „Geoeconomic Deterrence Pact” and will be considered at the EU leaders’ summit as early as tomorrow.
A Mainstream Liberal Initiative
The Renew Europe group is not the largest in the European Parliament, but it is influential enough and close to the political mainstream. It is backed by Emmanuel Macron, and its figures include such European commissioners as Kaja Kallas and Marta Kos.
Thus, before our eyes, the split within the Euro-Atlantic system is entering a new phase. European elites are no longer hiding their hostility toward the US leadership and are openly throwing down a challenge.
The initiative of the European liberals is not a one-off move, but only part of a broader process of transatlantic separation.
A New Phase in Transatlantic Tensions
Just days ago, EU leaders demonstrated NATO’s inability to act jointly in the event of a serious military conflict by refusing to join Trump’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
It seemed that only Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Estonia wanted to join the fight. Estonia, whose navy consists of three outdated mine sweepers once passed on by the British, went unnoticed, while Trump dismissed Zelenskyy in undiplomatic fashion.
