President Maia Sandu, commenting on the tragic death of Lyudmila Vartic, the wife of prominent PAS functionary Dumitru Vartic, named those she considers responsible.
Who Sandu Blamed
Surprisingly, this time the blame was not placed on Putin or the “hand of Moscow.” But neither, of course, was the system of party dictatorship and political protection for insiders considered responsible. Instead, blame was assigned to local residents and the party organization.
“It is a great tragedy that no one helped this woman. This is a failure of the PAS team in Hîncești, because I find it hard to believe that no one on the team knew about the situation,” Sandu said.
She continued by saying that the issue was not limited to the party team, but also involved acquaintances, colleagues, and friends.
“This woman lived in a community, and I find it hard to believe that no one in that community saw what was happening. Most likely, they did not want to see it,” the head of state added.
The Hospital Episode
Sandu also referred to what happened at the district hospital. According to her, the hospital administration failed to report the incident at Lyudmila’s own request, so as not to harm her at work.
Yet even here, Sandu, to put it mildly, was not entirely truthful. Petru Ciubotaru, the recently resigned director of the hospital in Hîncești, said nothing about any request from Lyudmila herself. He spoke about the “family.”
And by “family,” he clearly did not mean the deceased woman’s underage daughters, but her all-powerful husband.
People Knew
And people, of course, knew. Once the tragedy became public, many witnesses were quickly found who had known about the atmosphere inside the family. It was not even particularly well hidden.
Vartic openly forced his wife out of the house, depriving her of housing without any court ruling and forbidding her from seeing her children. Human rights defenders also emerged who knew about everything, but said they could not speak out publicly.
“It Does Not Matter”
“It does not matter that the suspect was a member of the ruling party. We want justice to prevail, and we will insist on that,” Sandu said today.
But perhaps it does matter.
Perhaps it was precisely because of his party card and his place in the party hierarchy that Vartic was able to silence everyone who knew about the evil taking place and remained silent.
Perhaps it was his political influence that helped him force the hospital director into official falsification and conceal information about the suicide attempt.
Perhaps it is because of his political connections that he is not sitting in a cell and giving testimony, but instead recording video statements and handing investigators strange “suicide notes” allegedly left by his late wife.
