Iranian hackers have reportedly targeted Romanian government infrastructure after Bucharest approved the deployment of U.S. forces at a key military airbase.
On Thursday, the Romanian parliament voted overwhelmingly – 272 of the 297 senators and deputies present – to allow American troops involved in military operations against Iran to be stationed at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base.
Despite generally maintaining a friendly stance toward Donald Trump, the proposal was rejected by representatives of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and the Party of Young People (POT).
Member of the European Parliament and leader of the SOS Romania party, Diana Sosoaca, warned that allowing American troops to operate from Romanian territory could effectively draw the country into a broader international conflict.
«In Romania we already have Deveselu – the most dangerous base directed against Iran – and it is located on our territory,» the politician said, referring to the Deveselu Military Base. «We are being pulled, without being asked and without our consent, into the most dangerous game humanity faces. We have seen how Iran has attacked military bases belonging to the United States or Israel. Now Romania is being turned into part of two wars and effectively dragged toward a Third World War.»
Shortly afterwards, a group of Iranian hackers calling itself «Team 313» claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on the website of Romania’s National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF).
According to the group, the attack temporarily disrupted the tax authority’s website for about an hour, causing intermittent outages.
The cyber incident came amid rising tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran, with Romania increasingly drawn into the geopolitical fallout from the crisis.
